Modern car manufacturers have been put under an increasing amount of pressure of late, with more calls for electric and hybrid cars taking its toll. Seeing drivers neglect your conventional petrol and diesel models in favour of electric alternatives, big brands have had no choice but to adapt during these changing times.
The latest to jump on the electric car bandwagon is Jaguar Land Rover, having joined forces with industry competitor; BMW.
Together, the rivals will create the technology to assist electric car production, pooling their talents to produce electric motors, transmissions and power electronics.
The benefits to doing so are plentiful. From being able to get electric cars off the production line quicker than ever before to meeting the stringent anti-pollutions laws the industry now faces, this joint venture could be the making of both brands.
BMW board member Klaus Froehlich said:
“Together, we have the opportunity to cater more effectively for customer needs by shortening development time and bringing vehicles and state-of-the-art technologies more rapidly to market.”
Nick Rogers, Jaguar Land Rover’s engineering director, said:
“We’ve proven we can build world-beating electric cars but now we need to scale the technology to support the next generation of Jaguar and Land Rover products.”
This is not however the first example of competitors joining forces. Volkswagen and Ford are currently making cars together while rumours continue to circulate over a Fiat and Renault business merge.
