Bristol businesses turning to chauffeur driven car hire as cost of rail fares soar

It’s been reported that chauffeur driven private hire companies in Bristol are seeing an increase in business from local companies as many are turning to their services to make savings as the cost of rail travel continues to rise.

With many Bristol based businesses needing to travel to London on a regular basis for meetings and functions, the cost of travel via rail can really mount up for companies sending more than one employee at a time on business trips to the capital. Plus, selected rail operators are planning fare rises in the New Year, which means the cost of travelling by train is due to escalate further.

With the cost of two first class return rail tickets for a peak period costing as much as £440, but a chauffeur driven car with the capacity to carry up to four passengers priced from £275, many companies are opting for the chauffeur option as there are great savings to be made.

While weddings and special events such as birthdays and nights out used to be the bread butter jobs for chauffeur hire operators, the tide is slowly turning for some Bristol transport providers who’ve reported a marked increase in corporate contracts.

While most companies are attempting to make cut backs during this time of economic uncertainty, the trend of hiring a chauffeur driven car as opposed to travelling by rail, could be something we could see repeated across the UK, spelling good news for all private hire operators.

Cars for Stars battle the elements to transport terminally ill children to awards ceremony

Despite the heavy snowfall and treacherous driving conditions, Cars for Stars succeeded in transporting 21 terminally ill children and their families to a special awards ceremony in Newcastle this week where all of the youngsters were due to receive awards.

Each of the children has courageously battled a life threatening disease, and all of them were in line to receive a Brave Heart Award at the ceremony held in St James Park, Newcastle this week.

Cars for Stars originally took a booking for a mix of 6 limos and party buses for the event, but a further 5 vehicles were booked at the last minute after another supplier let the Brave Heart Awards organisers down.

In total 11 limos including 4 hummer H2 limos, a H3 hummer, a party bus, Audi Q7, 2 Chrysler limos and 2 Lincoln Towncars supplied by both Millennium Limousines and Elite Limos, were booked to ferry the 21 brave youngsters and their families to the awards ceremony. Tragically, one limo had to be cancelled at the 11th hour after one of the children sadly passed away.

However the planned event ran into serious trouble after the UK, and particularly the north of the country, was hit by snow, ice and plummeting temperatures. The severe weather conditions threatened the whole event as the roads were so treacherous, there was no hope of sending the chauffeur driven limousines to collect the children.

Determined to not let the youngsters down, Stephen Welch at Cars for Stars and Millennium Limousines set to work pressuring the local authorities to bring out the gritting lorries to clear the impassable roads so that the planned limo rides for the sick children could go ahead.

Cars for Stars and Millennium Limousines succeeded in persuading the council’s gritting lorries to put in overtime in order to clear the roads so as to ensure the limos could reach the Brave Heart children so they could enjoy the special treat so they very much deserved.

We are delighted to report that all 21 children and their families made it to the Brave Heart Awards ceremony in their chauffeur driven limos and a great time was had by all.

£76k car hire bill for Wales Office

Official figures revealed this week showed that the Wales Office spent £76,000 on car hire in the four months between May to September of this year.

Spending figures for the government office detailing everything from bills for office furniture, to heating costs and credit card spending were revealed in the recent figures. The information was made public after a pre-election promise from the coalition government to promote transparency within public spending.

One of the biggest bills revealed as part of the publication of spending figures was for car hire, coming in at £76,000 for four months. The previous year the bill for chauffeured cars came to £184,005.

The cost of keeping two chauffeur driven cars in operation in London, and one in Cardiff, for use by the Secretary of State and the Welsh Minister was said to be £13,656 a month. However the second car in London has been axed in recent weeks as part of spending cuts.

A spokesperson for the Wales Office added that ministers always travelled standard class when travelling between Cardiff and London by rail.

The move to publish government spending figures was made in the wake of the expenses scandal which revealed that some government MPs had been working the system to their advantage. It is hoped the increased transparency into how public money is spent by government ministers will go some way to regaining the trust of the public.
