£1.3m Mercedes hypercar on schedule for 2019

This week further details regarding the 1020bhp AMG Project One have been revealed, with the futuristic car expected to be unveiled in 2019. First announced at the Frankfurt Motor Show earlier this year, the ‘hypercar’ is F1-inspired, rumoured to set customers back an eye-watering £1.9m.

Referred to as the OMG-AMG, the car is said to be packed with forward-thinking F1 technology. While only a few selected individuals were invited for a sneak peak at the supercar, one lucky attendee said it was a ‘truly wild thing, extreme in every respect.’

‘It is a one-off – so far we have no plans for further derivatives like race ones and spider models,’ AMG chief Tobias Moers told CAR this month. ‘We are starting to think about what’s next, but there is no strategy for expansion of Project One.’

But, what makes tis car so special? Weighing just 1300kg , the carbon fibre sportscar is both mechanically and visually impressive, with an emissions-free battery range of 30 miles integrated. Combining a 748bhp combustion engine with 408bhp of electric power, the monster will basically be a road-legal F1 car.

Set to be a close competitor of the Aston Martin 001 hypercar, the Mercedes project has been supported by F1 designer Adrian Newey s well as Red Bull Racing.

Restricted to 275 units, AMG CEO, Moers, is said to be going alone with this project, saying:

‘We have a lot of loyal AMG customers who buy nearly every AMG. If these people are interested in a Project One, we have to sell them one.’

Sales and marketing chief Ola Källenius confirmed it would be road-legal. ‘It will be a road car and you could drive it every day,’ he said.
