Renault Koleos: premium aspirations on a budget price tag

We are all aware that there is no shortage of great value mid-size SUVs on the market today. With Skoda recently launching the brilliant Kodiaq, the Kia Sorento is a fun favourite and Mazda’s new CX-5 is certainly a five-star motor.

Renault is hoping that its new Koleos is good enough to take on all of these. Additionally, they want to give rivals such as the Audi Q5 some competition.

Although, one aspect which could go against this vehicle is the lack of a seven-seater version. Apparently this was a decision which was made due to the appearance of the car. Renault have stated that they went against it due to the fact that seven seats would give it a blocker-rear, and the three rows of seats would be somewhat compromised for space.

Instead of doing this, the manufacturer has prioritised offering as much space as possible for just the two rows of seats, while offering the attraction that customers want when buying new vehicles. Besides, the company does offer the trendy seven-seater Grand Scenic for those who do want something a little bigger.

The line-up offer for this motor is relatively simple. There are two diesel engines: 1.6 litre producing 130hp, and a 175hp 2.0 litre. Though, petrol’s aren’t available the company is watching the market and says that you can’t opt for hybrid, either.

The lower powered model comes in just front-wheel-drive form along with a six-speed manual gearbox, while the 2.0 litre is available with either two or four wheel-drive.

It’s predicted that most buyers will find that the smaller engine is more adequate for day-to-day commuting. Around town it runs quietly and smoothly, whilst the manual gear change is very precise.

For the money, the new Koleos offers an impressive amount of kit. Not only does it look great, but the interior is bordering on premium and its clear to see that a lot of thought has gone into its practicality. It is exactly what is predicted from a Renault in 2017- which is not a bad thing.
