Aston Martin reveals ‘family’ of SUVs

Aston Martin is about to arrive fashionably late to the SUV party with a family of crossovers.

The British brand has already made a deal to introduce its DBX SUV in 2019. This motor comes as a part of the plan which sees a fully-refreshed line-up introduced in the next five-six years. However, it has also stated that it already has plans to expand the family whilst demand grows for high-riding cars around the globe.

“I think you have to look at it that way. You have to provide a solution to different customers,” Aston Martin’s Chief Creative Officer, Marek Reichman, said when asked if there will be more SUVs than just the DBX.

“Absolutely, there is room to spread.”

While Aston Martin showed off its intentions to join the SUV segment with the original DBX concept featuring a two-door coupe body style, Reichman admits it was a “Trojan horse” which was designed to test and tease numerous ideas including the details of the D11, an electric high-riding Aston Martin. However, the final production is set to be a more conventional five-door crossover.

Whilst exact details haven’t been confirmed yet, a source which is close to the project has stated that the DBX is likely to feature the underpinnings of the next-generation Mercedes-Benz GLE. This comes due to the technical tie-up with the German car makers parent company Daimler.

The above would not only give it access to a cutting-edge, lightweight platform which will limit Aston’s investment to designing its own body style and interior treatment, it also gives it the potential to utilise and feature the most up-to-date engine technologies.

The ‘family’ of SUVs is yet to be revealed, but is reported to include multiple variants of the DBX as well as an all-electric model based on the larger Mercedes GLS.

According to reports, the DBX will begin the process of production in 2019, which is a year after the next generation Mercedes Benz GLE is due to be revealed. It is going to be constructed at a new factory in Cardiff Wales.
