Volkswagen Celebrate The Golf’s 40th Birthday with R 400 at Beijing Motor Show

Volkswagen are renowned for their wacky concepts, teasing consumers with their innovation in mechanical production.

It appears that they have acted on one of their out-of-the-box ideas, exhibiting a Golf R 400 concept at the Beijing Motor Show this week.

Golf’s are pretty much associated with young drivers, those who are passionate about speed and thrill. This concept is no different with VW claiming that it ‘reflects the sporty potential of the model series.’

The car possesses a power to weight ratio of 3.4bhp per kilo and is like a “racing car figure” according to Volkswagen member of the board of management, Dr Heinz-Jakob Neusser.

Although just a concept Dr Neusser made numerous hints throughout the day, suggestive that the car may make the production line and hit the roads in the near future.

“What we have to do now is build it.” He claimed.

The low-slung edition featured in white, a very popular colour of late. It showcased 19-inch alloys, again living up to its stereotype of being the youngster’s first choice for transport.

The car is 40mm wider than the standard model, revealing a modern adherence to motor design.

Although a brand-new invention there are elusive influences from Volkswagen’s past. The subtly flared wheel arches are reminiscent of those featured on the 1988 Rallye Golf G60, revealing a classiness that the modern market craves for.

Ina addition to the arches there are plenty of mechanical alterations

The car sports the same 2.0-litre TSI engine but executes 395bhp and 450Nm of torque, a huge increase from the standard model’s 296bhp and 380Nm output

Its six-speed dual clutch and permanent Haldex all-wheel drive system means that the Golf has been revolutionised with the Golf now getting from 0-62 in just 2.9 seconds with a top speed of a whopping 174mph!

So, what do you think of the new Golf, is it new and improved or new and ridiculous? Please leave your thoughts.
