A car mad couple from Barnsley drove their vintage MG car from Barnsley to New Zealand where they plan to set up home following their mammoth 30,000 mile journey.

Robert and Lynne Douglas drove the 63-year-old MG TC sports car across deserts, rivers and single track roads, travelling through Western and Eastern Europe, Russia, China, South East Asia, catching a boat from Singapore to transport them to their final destination of New Zealand.

64-year-old Robert bought the classic car as a teenager for just £150, just weeks before meeting Lynne who he later married. However their most recent trip is the not the first adventure the couple have enjoyed in their vintage ride, they’ve previously travelled around Australia in the MG, also through South and Central America, plus a road trip up the West Coast of the US and Alaska, so they were more than prepared for their epic journey from the UK to down under.

The toughest part of their most recent adventure was navigating through Mongolia as the duo quickly discovered that any maps they had for the country were completely useless as the only roads were dirt tracks made by other vehicles. They eventually found the easier way to travel was by following telegraph poles, abandoning their maps completely.

After five months of driving, and 30,000 miles covered in the restored sports car with an estimated fuel consumption of 30mpg, Robert and Lynne Douglas finally set foot on Kiwi soil where they now plan to start a new life. With their track record for globetrotting, the adventurous couple are likely to be planning their next road trip.
