Classic car driven 30,000 miles from Yorkshire to New Zealand

A car mad couple from Barnsley drove their vintage MG car from Barnsley to New Zealand where they plan to set up home following their mammoth 30,000 mile journey.

Robert and Lynne Douglas drove the 63-year-old MG TC sports car across deserts, rivers and single track roads, travelling through Western and Eastern Europe, Russia, China, South East Asia, catching a boat from Singapore to transport them to their final destination of New Zealand.

64-year-old Robert bought the classic car as a teenager for just £150, just weeks before meeting Lynne who he later married. However their most recent trip is the not the first adventure the couple have enjoyed in their vintage ride, they’ve previously travelled around Australia in the MG, also through South and Central America, plus a road trip up the West Coast of the US and Alaska, so they were more than prepared for their epic journey from the UK to down under.

The toughest part of their most recent adventure was navigating through Mongolia as the duo quickly discovered that any maps they had for the country were completely useless as the only roads were dirt tracks made by other vehicles. They eventually found the easier way to travel was by following telegraph poles, abandoning their maps completely.

After five months of driving, and 30,000 miles covered in the restored sports car with an estimated fuel consumption of 30mpg, Robert and Lynne Douglas finally set foot on Kiwi soil where they now plan to start a new life. With their track record for globetrotting, the adventurous couple are likely to be planning their next road trip.

Royal chauffeurs to undergo extra training ahead of William and Kate wedding

Royal chauffeurs will undergo extra training ahead of the forthcoming wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton on April 29th, it has been reported.

Following the incident which saw a royal car carrying Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall come under attack in London by a group of student protesters before Christmas, security surrounding front-line royals is expected to be stepped up so as to avoid a similar situation in the future.

With such a high profile event as the royal wedding, which is due to take place at Westminster Abbey in central London, there are concerns that protesters angry over recent government spending cuts could target the event for maximum exposure.

To safeguard against any potential problems, those employed as chauffeurs for leading members of the royal family are said to be undergoing intensive driving courses which will help them deal with any difficult situations should they arise.

It’s been reported that Scotland Yard had suggested the royal household start employing police drivers for security reasons, however the Queen is thought to have decided against this option, and instead instructed the current chauffeurs to undertake special security training.

As well as receiving expert training on how to avoid a hijack situation, the chauffeurs will also be coached on how to execute sharp U-turns and 3-point turns, manoeuvres which are particularly challenging to perform behind the wheel of a hefty Rolls Royce limo.

The intensive driving course for the royal chauffeurs is being run by the police. Previously, royal chauffeurs were trained by the SAS, however it is thought this method of training is no longer in practice.

Wedding Roller Coaster

Pink hummer limo transports couple to their rollercoaster wedding

A pink hummer limo driven by a smart suited chauffeur transported a bride and groom to their unconventional wedding venue yesterday in Florida.

Richie Kearns and Sherry Blais chose the most romantic day of the year, Valentine’s Day, to tie the knot in a very unusual ceremony.

The day started off traditionally enough, with a chauffeur driven wedding car, red carpet arrival, and the blushing bride wearing a white wedding dress, but there was nothing conventional about this big day as the couple strapped themselves into the Beach Hurricane Rollercoaster to exchange their vows.

The couple from Fort Myers, USA, chose to tie the knot on the only remaining wooden rollercoaster in South Florida to ensure their Valentine’s Day wedding was especially memorable.

After arriving at the Dania Beach theme park, Boomers, in the back of a chauffeur driven pink hummer limo, the bride and groom were treated to a red carpet welcome, complete with a balloon arch, and white tulle draping.

The couple then hopped onboard the rollercoaster which had a sign above which read “Tunnel of Love” along with a handful of bridesmaids as their family and friends looked on as they exchanged vows on the top of the white knuckle ride.

As soon as they were announced husband and wife, the newlyweds were whisked off on the rollercoaster, with the bride hanging onto her veil at one point to stop it from flying off during the ride.

Newlyweds Richie and Sherry said they were inspired to tie the knot on a rollercoaster after they spotted another couple doing getting hitched on a high-speed ride a few months earlier.

Jaguar’s iconic E-Type celebrates its 50th anniversary

The celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the E-Type Jaguar got into full swing in London yesterday, helped along by a couple of familiar faces.

Legendary test driver renowned for his connection to Jaguar, and the E-Type sports car in particular, 91-year-old Norman Lewis, and the only man to win the World Championships on four and two wheels, John Surtees, kicked off the celebration behind the wheel of a vintage 1961 E-Type Jaguar.

F1 Champion John Surtees described how the sleek sports car was a “must have” in the 60’s as previously, motorists had associated these superbly designed models with German and Italian manufacturers, and so the E-Type was one of the first British designed models to really set the pulses racing.

The design of the E-Type has endured 50 years and is still regarded by many experts to be the finest sports car design ever created.

A 1961 model which has been recently restored to an immaculate standard was loaned from the Classic Motor Museum in Bridgnorth especially for the event.

In a fitting tribute to the celebrated design of the E-Type Jag, the celebrations took place yesterday (February 8th) at London’s Design Museum. Also on display at the function was one of the original press cars from the 60’s, the E-Type 77 RW, which was kindly loaned by Jaguar Heritage.

A number of these classic Jaguar sports cars will remain on display at the museum in London until the beginning of March.
