Rise in car hire bookings

According to recent statistics collected by carrentals.co.uk the last 12 months has seen an increase in the number of people taking out car hire services. The news is particularly encouraging as the car rental industry was braced for a difficult year in light of the current economic downturn.

The study used figures taken from the peak summer holiday season, namely July and August 2009 and 2010. The results showed that despite a 9% rise in the cost of car hire during this period, more people chose to hire a rental vehicle when compared to the previous year.

The rise in car hire rates has been caused partly by the banks. With banks feeling reluctant to lend to businesses, some car hire companies are struggling with funding which has pushed up the cost of hire for rental customers.

The tourism industry was bracing itself for a tough couple of years as the credit crunch and the after affects continued to be felt across the UK and Europe. However research has found that people have not stopped taking vacations, but they have changed the way they holiday. Car hire bidding war hots up

The battle to take over car hire firm Dollar Thrifty is hotting up between the two main contenders, rivals Avis and Hertz.

Hertz have announced that they’ve upped their offer to take over the US car rental firm to $1.43 billion in cash and shares, which works out at $50 per share. Hertz are believed to be the favoured bidder with Dollar Thrifty as they are offering a $45 million breakup fee should the deal fail, something which Avis cannot afford to match.

Last week Avis made their most recent bid for the company which was $1.3 billion, which has now been topped by Hertz with their $1.43 billion bid.

Negotiations began in April after Hertz made an offer of $41 per share to the smaller company. At this point Avis waded in with a higher bid of $47 per share, which was later rejected.

Hertz is the largest player in the global car hire market but at present, the majority of their sales come from business client customers. Dollar Thrifty, on the other hand, is a key player in the lower end area of the market. Taking over Dollar Thrifty would enable Hertz to take a share of the domestic leisure market, an area which Hertz is keen to enhance its presence across the world.

Complaints over FA spending on chauffeur driven limos for players

The Football Association will this week reveal its accounts after complaints have been made in regard to spending on luxurious chauffeur driven cars for players, while backroom staff and non-playing employees are being forced to make spending cuts.

FA councillors have voiced objections to the use of chauffeur driven limousines for junior England players. Football players from the under 16 squad up, and including women’s team players, are all provided with cars and drivers to transport them to and from games, according to the FA councillors.

FA staff argue that money is being wasted unnecessarily as each player is allocated a car and chauffeur each, even when players are being transported from the same area.

The main gripe of the FA backroom staff is that they’ve been forced to make cut backs across the board to save money, however the players have remained completely unaffected by the spending cuts. Although they agree the senior England Squad need to receive the highest level of care, they protest over the same use of luxury transport for junior teams.

A spokesperson for the FA has defended the use of chauffeur driven car hire for England players, explaining that the organisation has a duty of care to ensure that all footballers are returned back to their clubs as quickly and safely as possible after carrying out England duty. They added that car sharing is in practice wherever possible.

Bentley limo once used to chauffeur Princess Diana available for hire

£1 million bill for chauffeur driven limos for Scottish Government

It’s been revealed that the Scottish Government spent £1 million on chauffeur driven limos for ministerial officials over the last 12 months.

Breaking down the figure, £929,899 was the total amount spent on chauffeur cars in the last year, with a further £65,759 being spent on private hire vehicles.

A fleet of 25 official cars are used to chauffeur around Scottish government ministers while on official business. However the cost of maintaining this fleet of chauffeur cars has risen dramatically in the last few years which may be contributing to the large bill. In the last 12 months the running costs and staff bill needed to maintain the fleet has risen by £21,000.

A Labour MP has called the figure “astonishing” and is asking why during a time of severe cut backs to government spending, Scottish officials are not forsaking the luxury of chauffeur driven car to help save money.

However the Scottish Government have released a statement to defend the £1 million bill for chauffeur cars saying the amount spent on ministerial travel has actually decreased by a £1 million with the figure coming down from £5.9 million to £4.9 million between 2009-2010. It was also added that spending on private hire vehicles, which is only used as “last resort” has also been significantly reduced.
