Mercedes set to introduce iPad docking stations

Mercedes Benz has revealed plans to introduce an iPad docking system which will be installed in the headrests of the front seats.

BMW were the first luxury car manufacturer to launch an in-car iPad docking system. The car maker unveiled the new system at the recent Paris Motor Show.

Not ones to be left behind, Mercedes-Benz set to work on creating their own version, the exact details of which have just been revealed.

Mercedes plan to offer iPad docking stations in the headrests of the front seats for use by passengers travelling in the rear of the vehicle. It’s expected the iPad docking system, which allows the device to be operated and charged, will be especially popular with business people as it will allow them to work while on the move, and also with families as the iPad can be used as a form on in-car entertainment to keep children amused on long journeys.

It is thought the iPad docking system onboard Mercedes models will be a great asset for private hire chauffeur drivers as it offers an extra onboard service for paying passengers.

Concerns have been raised as to whether the positioning of the iPad docking station in the rear of the front headrest is the best idea as it could be uncomfortable to operate while sitting back in the rear seats.

The inclusion of Apple device accessories in vehicles is becoming a common occurrence as car makers seek to include these added extras in new models to add another selling point to their vehicles.

Vintage sports car makes £75k at auction

An extremely rare 1920’s sports car was one of two classic motors to achieve £75,000 at an Isle of Man auction last week.

The 1927 Arab Super Sport attracted a great deal of attention due to its rarity as it’s believed to be one of only two existing models in the world.

The vintage vehicle has been owned by an Isle of Man resident for the past 18 years until it was sold at auction at Mount Murray last Friday.

The Arab Super Sport was thought to have been manufactured in Hertfordshire in the 1920’s and boasts a 2 litre 4 cylinder engine which is capable of reaching speeds of up to 90mph.

The auctioneer at Mount Murray placed a guide price of £80,000 on the classic car, although he conceded it was difficult to a gauge a selling price on the vehicle due to its rarity.

The other classic sports car to achieve a staggering £75,000 price at auction was a Riley Brooklands, while a 1936 Railton Fairmile vehicle was sold for £37,000 at the motor auction.

The rare Arab Super Sport attracted bidders from across Europe, including Germany and Finland. A number of interested parties from across the UK also made the trip to the Isle of Man to bid on the vintage sports car. In the end, the 1920’s ride was sold to a UK bidder.

Victim of chauffeur job scam at risk of losing his home

One of the victim’s of Mark Shortland, who was jailed in September for offering fake chauffeur jobs, is now at risk of losing his home after he quit his job to take up the new position offered by the conman.

Ian Fawsitt from Gotham, Nottinghamshire, fell victim to the scam after applying for a job he saw advertised on the Directgov website in April. After attending an interview in May, Mr Fawsitt was offered the position of chauffeur with Mark Shortland.

Having been made an offer of work, Fawsitt handed in his notice at the chemical cleaning company where he was employed at the time. Fawsitt also handed over £100 to the Shortland which he was told was a deposit for the keys to the luxury BMW he would be using to chauffeur high profile names such as Simon Cowell.

After the start date for Fawsitt’s his new job came and went and he was unable to get in touch with Shortland, he decided to contact police. It was at this point he realised he’d been duped into quitting his job, and he was among 30 other people who’d also been caught out by the scam.

The news couldn’t have come at a worse time as Mr Fawsitt’s wife is about to give birth to the couple’s first child. Now Fawsitt is left jobless, and says he’s lost thousands of pounds, his car, and to top it all he’s now facing the prospect of losing his home.

43-year-old conman Mark Shortland made £100,000 from his victims by offering fake chauffeur jobs. He was convicted at Sheffield Crown Court after admitting six charges of theft, three counts of fraud, and one charge of obtaining services by deception. Shortland is now serving a three year jail sentence for his crimes.

The Chauffeur-Lite service is a growing trend in Orange County

The new Chauffeur-Lite service is proving a big hit with by social customers and  business clientele in Orange County in the US.

The yourcarourdriver.com service offers private hire customers in the South California area the opportunity to acquire chauffeur driven transportation at a fraction of the cost. The service works in much the same way as a taxi, whereby on-call chauffeurs await a call and travel to customer’s collection point, but they are then chauffeured in their own vehicle as opposed to a limo owned by the company.

The practice enables yourcarourdriver.com to offer ultra low rates for chauffeur hire services with rates starting from $30 per hour for a driver, although a minimum hire period of 3 hours does apply on most nights.

The chauffeur programme is certainly proving popular with the people of Orange County as yourcarourdriver.com has reportedly doubled its revenue in the last 12 months. Chauffeur-Lite offers a more affordable private hire option compared to the traditional chauffeur and limo hire package which is particularly appealing during this time of economic uncertainty.

Yourcarourdriver.com also believes a tightening on drink drive laws have also a knock-on effect on their business as fewer people are tempted to risk driving after a glass or two of wine, and so instead, opt for the sensible option of a chauffeur on their nights out.

Rise in car hire bookings

According to recent statistics collected by carrentals.co.uk the last 12 months has seen an increase in the number of people taking out car hire services. The news is particularly encouraging as the car rental industry was braced for a difficult year in light of the current economic downturn.

The study used figures taken from the peak summer holiday season, namely July and August 2009 and 2010. The results showed that despite a 9% rise in the cost of car hire during this period, more people chose to hire a rental vehicle when compared to the previous year.

The rise in car hire rates has been caused partly by the banks. With banks feeling reluctant to lend to businesses, some car hire companies are struggling with funding which has pushed up the cost of hire for rental customers.

The tourism industry was bracing itself for a tough couple of years as the credit crunch and the after affects continued to be felt across the UK and Europe. However research has found that people have not stopped taking vacations, but they have changed the way they holiday. Fewer holidaymakers are choosing to fly to their destination, many instead opting for travel by ferry or car hire in order to cut down costs.

The Managing Director at carrentals.co.uk says that the importance of finding an affordable deal on car hire has never been greater which means price comparison websites are becoming increasingly popular as holidaymakers attempt to hunt down the cheapest deal possible for travel.

Aston Martin driven by James Bond to go under the hammer

A 1964 Aston Martin driven by James Bond in the classic movies Goldfinger and Thunderball is expected to fetch $5 million when it goes under the hammer at Sotheby’s “Automobiles of London” auction next month.

The Aston Martin DB5 has been on display in New York this week to give potential American buyers the chance to see the famous ride up close before the auction takes place in London on October 27th.

The vintage car is one of a pair of Aston Martins used in the filming of the James Bond films starring Sean Connery. The luxurious sports car still offers all of the famous James Bond gadgets which are operated from a switch on the armrest. The mighty car is fully equipped with front mounted machine guns, bulletproof windscreen, a smoke screen, nail spreader, oil slick sprayer and a revolving number plate to cater for all the needs of a top secret agent.

The second identical Aston Martin used in the filming of the two Bond movies was stolen in 90’s and Sotheby now believe the car no longer exists.

Proceeds from the sale of the 1964 Aston Martin DB5 will be donated to the Jerry Lee Foundation which helps those affected by crime and poverty in countries across the world.

Car hire bidding war hots up

The battle to take over car hire firm Dollar Thrifty is hotting up between the two main contenders, rivals Avis and Hertz.

Hertz have announced that they’ve upped their offer to take over the US car rental firm to $1.43 billion in cash and shares, which works out at $50 per share. Hertz are believed to be the favoured bidder with Dollar Thrifty as they are offering a $45 million breakup fee should the deal fail, something which Avis cannot afford to match.

Last week Avis made their most recent bid for the company which was $1.3 billion, which has now been topped by Hertz with their $1.43 billion bid.

Negotiations began in April after Hertz made an offer of $41 per share to the smaller company. At this point Avis waded in with a higher bid of $47 per share, which was later rejected.

Hertz is the largest player in the global car hire market but at present, the majority of their sales come from business client customers. Dollar Thrifty, on the other hand, is a key player in the lower end area of the market. Taking over Dollar Thrifty would enable Hertz to take a share of the domestic leisure market, an area which Hertz is keen to enhance its presence across the world.
